Kibale Forest

Kibale national park is at 795 km sq. with an altitude of 1,590m above sea level. The park has the most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda and home to a total of 70 mammal species most famous are the 13 species of primates. These include L’honest monkeys, bush babies, olive Baboons, bush babies, vervet monkeys, black and white monkeys, blue monkeys, red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabey. It also contains over 375 bird species.

The Kibale-Fort Portal area is one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations to explore. The park lies close to the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area and within half a day’s drive of the Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semuliki national parks as well as the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve. It is comprised of Bigodi swamp which doubles as a habitat for many primates and a breeding ground for birds.

In this park, you can also enjoy the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience that enables visitors to accompany Researchers and Habituators into the forest. The chimpanzee groups involved are less accustomed to human presence than those visited on the Primate Walk and following and viewing them is both exciting and challenging. As visitors start as early as 6 am to be able to watch chimps leaving their overnight nests between 6:00 – 6:30am before feeding, copulating, hunting, breastfeeding, resting, patrolling and displaying until it is time to build new nests around 7pm.  This is a half or full day experience you can choose what you prefer.
